The story of Jack
We will read and translate the text "Jack-O-Lantern".
Now you will be divided into nine groups.
Each group gets a part of the text which they have to draw a picture to. It should be a picture that shows what happens in your part.
Afterwards we will put the pictures together. In that way we will turn the text into a comic strip.
Group 1
Once upon a time in Ireland there was a mean old man. His name was "Stingy Jack". Jack hated to spend his money. That is why he was called Stingy Jack.
Group 2
But what he really liked was to play tricks - especially on the Devil.
One night, Jack tricked the Devil into climbing up a tree. While he was up there, Jack carved a cross in the tree so the Devil couldn't come down.
Group 3
The Devil begged Jack to let him down. Only when the Devil promised not to claim his soul, did Jack let him down the tree.
Group 4
Soon after, Jack died.
Group 5
Jack went up to knock on Heaven's door, but God wouldn't open for him because Jack had been mean and selfish all his life.
Group 6
Then Jack thought that he might as well go to Hell instead. To his surprise, the Devil shut the door in his face.
Group 7
Jack was then doomed to walk into the dark night and wander the streets forever. The Devil gave him a piece of burning coal to help him light his way. Jack kept the burning coal in a carved-out turnip.
Group 8
In Ireland and Scotland, people began to carve scary faces on turnips to frighten Jack off - if he happened to pass their doors.
When the Irish emigrated to America, they brought the tradition of carving out turnips with them. They soon found out that it was much easier to carve out pumpkins.
